A short history of Nieuwvliet

Nieuwvliet has an older history than you might think at first glance.

• Sinte Pier: the forerunner of the village was Sinte Pier (also called Oud-Nieuwvliet), founded in 1527 by Jan Adornis, a land reclaimer, businessman and politician from Bruges; the old village lay just over a kilometre further west and was lost to the water.
• The name: Nieuwvliet refers to a vliet, a watercourse, and is as old as the polder history of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
• From farming to tourism: for centuries agriculture and livestock farming were the main source of income; only in the twentieth century did tourism become the driving force of the region, while the village kept its authentic character.
• Verdronken Zwarte Polder: reclaimed from the sea in 1623, but in 1802 a storm surge breached the dike; since then the sea has had free rein, creating a unique landscape.
