Waterdunen - Nature

On the coast of Zeelandic Flanders, between Breskens and Nieuwvliet-Bad, you will find the unique nature reserve Waterdunen. It is a special project where nature and people meet, bringing together different functions:
Tidal nature: a landscape shaped by the sea
- Recreation: a paradise for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, and beach lovers who want to experience the interaction of land and sea.
- Coastal protection: Waterdunen strengthens the Zeeland coast, while at the same time allowing you to experience the pure beauty of nature.
Over 350 hectares flooded twice a day by the sea, leaving behind a constantly changing landscape of:
- Mudflats and salt marshes: fertile plains where thousands of birds feed.
- Creeks and channels: glistening waterways winding through the area, constantly reshaping.
- Dunes and sandy plains: inviting places to walk and feel the fresh sea breeze on your face.
This constant dynamic makes Waterdunen a top location for migratory birds and other animals that fully depend on the tides.
Walking and cycling in Waterdunen
For visitors, several routes have been laid out, leading you to the most beautiful spots:
- Waterdunen walking route (5 km): takes you along creeks, viewpoints, and through the dunes.
- Coastal cycling route: connects to the Zeeland Coastal Route (LF1), allowing you to combine the area with a trip to Breskens and Nieuwvliet-Bad.
- Children’s route with play elements: short loops and fun spots along the way – perfect for families.
Tip: wear waterproof shoes or boots, especially after high tide, as some paths can be wet and muddy.
Bird paradise Waterdunen
Waterdunen is the hotspot for bird lovers.
- Spring: nesting avocets, redshanks, and terns in the creeks and on the mudflats.
- Autumn: thousands of waders and geese stopping for rest and food.
- Bird hides: scattered throughout the area, including near the Vijverplas and along the creeks, offering quiet observation.
- Guided excursions: Het Zeeuwse Landschap organises tours where you may spot special species such as the short-eared owl and spoonbill.
Be sure to bring binoculars – they will make your visit even more rewarding.
