Verdronken Zwarte Polder - Nature

The Verdronken Zwarte Polder near Nieuwvliet is a unique nature reserve where nature, culture and history come together.
What can you expect at the Verdronken Zwarte Polder?
Varied Landscape: Here you will find a rare mix of mudflats, salt marshes, dunes and beach. The transitions from salt to fresh and from sand to clay create an enormous diversity of plants and animals.
- Historic Story: The name of the area refers to the original polder that was embanked in 1623. The dark mud, rich in organic material, gave it the name ‘Zwarte Polder’. In 1802 the polder flooded after a dyke breach and was swallowed by the sea. Since then, nature has been left to take its course and the area has become known as the Verdronken Zwarte Polder.
- Walking Routes: From the Zeedijk you have a wonderful view over the area and several walking routes start here, including a lovely 2.5 km route through the reserve.
Flora and Fauna:
- In the dunes you will find elder, hawthorn, sea buckthorn and various species of roses. Songbirds such as nightingales and stonechats breed here.
- Along the seaward dunes you may encounter special plants such as blue sea holly, sea fennel and sea beet.
- The salt marsh area is rich in sea lavender, samphire and sea aster. Birds such as redshank, oystercatcher and ringed plover feel at home here. Rarer species such as the grasshopper warbler and corn bunting are also regularly seen.
