Paalridders - Observation point

The Paalridders viewpoint lies between Nieuwvliet-Bad and Cadzand, on the edge of the Verdronken Zwarte Polder nature area. It is a lovely short stop for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers who want to enjoy views over the dunes, polder landscape and the coast of West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

What can you expect at the Paalridders viewpoint?

• Beautiful viewpoint: Because the viewpoint is slightly higher than the surrounding area, you have a fine view over the dunes, the polder and the transition towards the coastal zone. Especially in clear weather, this is a very photogenic spot.
• On the edge of the Verdronken Zwarte Polder: The viewpoint is located beside a special nature area with mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, channels and watery sections. The original Zwarte Polder was created in 1623 and flooded in 1802, giving the area its present character.
• The battle between land and water: The name Paalridders suits this setting well. Along the Zeeland coast, wooden posts, groynes, dykes and dunes have played an important role in protection against the sea for centuries.
• Bird-rich nature: Thanks to the variety of salt and fresh water, sand, clay, dunes and wet areas, many plants and birds can be found here. Think of glasswort, sea lavender, sea buckthorn and sea holly, as well as birds such as redshank, oystercatcher, shelduck and ringed plover.

Practical information

• Great for walkers: From the area around the Zeedijk, you get a good overview of the Verdronken Zwarte Polder. A short walking route of around 2,5 to 3 kilometres runs through the nature area, including a boardwalk and sandy paths.
• Easy to combine: Paalridders is not a major attraction, but rather a pleasant short stop during a walk through the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, a beach visit near Nieuwvliet-Bad or a cycle ride towards Cadzand.

The Paalridders viewpoint is a peaceful and beautiful place to pause for a moment and take in the special landscape of West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
