What can you expect at the mill of Retranchement?

The mill on Molenstraat is a popular spot for visitors interested in history, engineering, and the Zeeland landscape. During your visit, you will experience how important mills once were in everyday life in the region.

• Corn and barley mill: The mill is unique as it is the only post mill in Zeeland equipped with a barley hulling installation. With a sail span of 20.70 metres, it is an impressive historic structure.
• Working mill: The mill is still operational and is used on a voluntary basis to grind grain, allowing you to experience authentic craftsmanship up close.
• Information centre: Next to the mill, you will find a small information centre featuring a cutaway drawing and interesting information about the history of the village of Retranchement and the mill itself.

History

• Unique post mill: The mill dates back to around 1643 and is one of the few remaining post mills in Zeeland. Of the four post mills in Zeeland, two are located in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
• Rich history: Over the centuries, the mill was rebuilt and restored several times. After storm damage in 1717 and severe damage during the Second World War, it was fully restored to its original state in 2002-2003.

Practical information

• Opening times: The mill is open in July and August on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 13:00 to 17:00.
